Public Education

Stop Crime SF researches court records, legislative activity and hosts public events that increase transparency into the criminal justice system.

Increasing visibility into court records

Court room activity is difficult for the public to access. We increase transparency by filing a paper “Records Request” to obtain court records pertaining to consequential cases. This helps expose patterns in the criminal justice system attributable to judges, prosecutors, public defenders or legislative programs that may not be serving their intended purpose.

Educational events for our members and the public

Stop Crime SF organizes events in conversation with criminal justice experts, elected officials, and legal professionals that provide opportunities for attendees to expand their knowledge about current and new programs. For example, we have hosted the DA, Police Chief on panels as well as forums with mayoral and judge candidates. Other events focus on new criminal justice program proposals or deep dives into the status of existing programs.

Key Issues We Are Working On

Alexandra’s Law

Overview

Alexandra's Law is a proposed legislation aimed at addressing the sale and distribution of fentanyl and other dangerous drugs. Named in memory of Alexandra, a victim of a fatal fentanyl overdose, this law seeks to impose stricter penalties on those who knowingly sell drugs that result in fatal overdoses. The goal is to deter drug dealers from distributing lethal substances and to hold them accountable for the deaths caused by their actions.

Objectives

  • Increase penalties for the sale and distribution of fentanyl.

  • Provide clear guidelines for prosecuting drug dealers linked to fatal overdoses.

  • Raise public awareness about the dangers of fentanyl and other lethal drugs.

  • Ensure that the criminal justice system can effectively address and deter the distribution of dangerous drugs.

Other Legislative Initiatives

In addition to Alexandra’s Law, we are working on various other initiatives aimed at improving public safety and justice reform. These include policies that address issues such as police accountability, judicial transparency, victim support, and rehabilitation programs. By engaging with local and state government bodies, we aim to influence the development and implementation of effective public safety policies.
