Sunset Public Safety Forum Draws Large Crowd

Stop Crime SF board member Nancy Tung briefs residents about the group’s crime prevention programs at the District 4 (Sunset) public safety town hall held by Supervisor Gordon Mar.

Stop Crime SF briefed residents on its Court Watch and crime prevention programs in a May 26 Sunset District public safety town hall attended by more than 200 people. The town hall was called by District 4 Supervisor Gordon Mar after a number of high-profile robberies in Sunset neighborhoods.

Stop Crime SF helped facilitate discussion as residents participated in breakout groups for burglary, package theft and other issues including a focus on the Chinese community.

"Sunset District residents feel that their public safety concerns are not taken seriously," said Nancy Tung, a Stop Crime SF board member. "We need to ensure that our public safety agencies build confidence with our Chinese and senior populations."

Tung facilitated a breakout group on home robberies and burglaries and represented Stop Crime SF at the town hall. Stop Crime SF board member Alan Wong, who is a legislative aide for Mar, helped organize the event.

Many residents at the gathering voiced support for building strong neighborhood safety networks, subsidizing home security cameras, a more responsive police department, and increased language access for the Chinese community.

“The Chinese community feels disproportionately targeted as victims of home invasion and burglary, and the incidents compiled by my office over the past several months support this concern,” said Mar. “This town hall is the latest step I’m taking to address these issues, bring the Sunset community together, and identify crime prevention strategies in our neighborhood.”
